Situated high above sea-level, the Mont Ventoux was not flooded by glaciers in the ice-age. This had positive consequences for fauna and flora. Accoring to botanists, there are more than 400 different flowers on teh Mont Ventoux and almost 1000 different sorts of plants. Today, the forest is almost 3600 ha big and contains pine trees, cedars, oaks, spruce, maples and pine trees. Even on the bold top, you will not just find juniper bushes but also many different small flowers.

The Mont Ventoux used to be an ideal place for sheeps to graze. On a certain moment, there were more than 80,000 of them. Today, you can still be stopped by sheep herds crossing the road near the top. Aside sheeps, one can find many other species on the mountain and in its forest. The most common mammals are: foxes, ties, stone mites, weasels, hares, rabbits and even wild boar. Aside mammals, one can find more tan 100 bird species, more than 800 varieties of beetles, snakes, butterflies, ants…
